Wellington, Wairarapa & Kapiti Island
November 2020

Join us on an exploration of some of the nooks and crannies of the Wellington and Wairarapa regions. In Wellington we bypass some of the more common tourist spots (although you can easily visit Te Papa and other popular destinations in a free afternoon or by staying on in Wellington pre or post tour), and instead see some  local favourites.

Stay in the delightful town of Martinborough. Delve into the history and mystery of astronomy at Stonehenge Aotearoa, and do some stargazing in the dark skies of the Wairarapa.

For native flora and fauna lovers, our visits to Otari-Wilton’s bush and Pukaha National Wildlife Centre at Mount Bruce will be a treat. The highlight, though, will be an overnight stay on Kapiti Island as we spend the evening on the hunt for the little spotted kiwi.

Whanganui History & Heritage
January 2021

The picturesque river city of Whanganui is one of New Zealand’s most captivating places to visit. The city’s history is a rich amalgam of Maori and settler cultures with the river being central to its historic, cultural, and artistic development. The Whanganui River was known as the ‘Rhine of New Zealand’ and served as an important transport route for Maori and European settlers. And it is still the heart of the city both physically and spiritually. Driving from Hamilton, we will wind along the river on the scenic River Road passing small river communities, stopping at Jerusalem. and viewing the many beautifully preserved Marae. Your first two nights’ accommodation will be on the Whanganui River at a unique lodge accessed by aerial cable car.

Whanganui is home to hundreds of working artists and the city is filled with galleries and buzzing with creative energy. The historic Sarjeant Gallery is home to one of the best collections of fine art in New Zealand. While the Regional Museum has an extensive collection of Lindauer paintings and taonga Maori.

The concentration of significant heritage buildings found in Whanganui is rare in New Zealand and on an easy walking tour around the city centre, you will find Victorian and Edwardian treasures coexisting with fine examples of mid twentieth century architecture. A knowledgeable local guide will share the stories of these intact heritage buildings.  A double decker bus tour will take you a little further afield to visit other historic sites such as the Pakaitore (Moutoa Gardens), Pukenamu Queen’s Park and the Durie Hill elevator. You will also visit Maori sites of significance such as St Paul’s Memorial Church at Putiki. This is a fine example of a fusion of Maori and European architecture. The interior incorporates outstandingly beautiful carvings and tukutuku wall panels.  While you are in Whanganui, the annual Vintage Weekend will take place showcasing other heritage attractions.

This tour offers a chance to explore in some depth a lesser known New Zealand city steeped in history, art, and culture.

Cruise and Walk in Pelorus Sound and Golden Bay
January/February 2021

We have discovered that cruising and walking is a great combination enabling you to relax and explore an area in depth without the need to pack and unpack, so we are delighted to present this opportunity in Pelorus Sound.
Being on board a boat also means that if you feel like staying on board, cruising with the skipper instead of walking, that’s an equally fine way to spend the day. Pelorus (Te Hoiere), the largest of the Sounds that make up the Marlborough Sounds, has great natural beauty, crystal clear and sheltered waters, lush native bush, and a choice of walks of varying lengths and difficulty.

For the second half of the tour you will be based in Golden Bay, a place many people fly over but never quite visit.  With one road in and out, the Bay is largely self-sufficient, protected by the curving needle of Farewell Spit at the northern end, and cut off from the rest of the South Island by three national parks. You will have the chance to enjoy its many natural wonders including Farewell Spit, the dramatic wind and sea-carved coastline  and the golden beaches. Some of our very good clients live in Golden Bay and they have shared with us their favourite walks, some of which we have included in the itinerary.

East Cape
February 2021

The East Cape of the North Island has a rugged beauty inspired by its isolation and on this tour you will be travelling on one of the world’s greatest and least known coastal road trips. This will be a leisurely journey because around every corner there is something new to see: stunning coastal scenery, white picture postcard bays and coves, remote settlements and farming communities and the ornately carved gateways of the many Marae. Its rich bicultural history makes this a unique destination.  You will have the opportunity to meet some of the local characters working on the out of the way back country stations. With a warm Mediterranean climate, clear blue skies and warm sunshine, this an ideal opportunity to explore some of the local treasures in a part of New Zealand you may not have seen. You will enjoy two-night stays at most stops, meaning time to relax and less packing and unpacking.

Walking Chatham & Pitt Islands
November 2021

Don’t let Covid-19 prevent you from taking a trip ‘overseas’ and experiencing a different culture. The Chatham Islands environment is special, rich in its variety of indigenous plants and animals, historic relics and landscapes. Prepare to be surprised as these mysterious islands yield up their secrets. Landscapes with volcanic peaks thrusting up out of rolling peatland, towering seacliffs, the vast expanse of Te Whanga Lagoon, endless kilometres of sandy beaches and the ever-present ocean. Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, about 800km east of Christchurch, the Chatham Islands are New Zealand’s most easterly region. An archipelago of 11 islands, only Pitt and Chatham are inhabited by about 600 people. Meet the Chatham Islanders; a friendly and easy-going local community who extend warm hospitality to visitors. Visit heritage sites and learn of the fascinating history shaped by years of isolation; Moriori, Maori, sealers, whalers, missionaries, farmers, and settlers. We will encounter plenty of plants and birds, including species native to the Chatham’s, some of which are quite rare. Enjoy plentiful fresh seafood: crayfish, paua, and blue cod.  Our walks will take us through contrasting landscapes:  karaka forests, farmland, rocky coastlines, dunes, sandy beaches, expansive wetlands and conservation areas. Spend two nights on Pitt Island, surprisingly different from Chatham Island. Pitt Island is still the most isolated rural community in New Zealand territory. Stay in recently opened suites on Chatham Island and a boutique lodge on Pitt.
