News from the road – Gibbs Farm and Matakana – February 2024
The weather gods played ball as our group explored the amazing outdoor sculptures of Gibbs Farm. The farm perched on the edge of the mighty Kaipara Harbour has a number of site-specific art installations. Seeing these pieces up close highlighted three very pleasant days in the Matakana area. My favourites were the huge elongated trombone shape of ‘Dismemberment Site 1’ by Anish Kapoor (has to be seen to be appreciated) and ‘Horizons’ by Neil Dawson which feels like a giant cartoon piece of paper about to set flight.
Cruising the Hauraki Gulf to Kawau Island was a lovely way to spend a day and we had visits to two more sculpture parks, tried some tasty local wines and everyone enjoyed pottering around the lively Saturday market. Certainly, a nice way to spend a few relaxed days close to home.
We plan to run this tour again next year, so email us at info@calderandlawsontours.co.nz to be notified when the itinerary is published.
