Colourful Portugal and exotic Morocco; a fascinating cultural mix providing rich sensory contrasts. Visually, the green and gold landscapes of steeply terraced vineyards in the Douro contrast with the burnt sienna of the Saharan Desert. Architecturally, the castles of Sintra, medieval villages, baroque churches and white washed quintas of Portugal contrast with the mosques, riads, souks, kasbahs, and medersas in Morocco. Mouth-watering tastes of port wine and salt cod bachalha in Porto will be as delectable as the mint tea and spicy tagines you will savour in Marrakech. hear the longing and lament of the Fado and the music and folk dance of the Berbers. Both countries cast an evocative spell over travellers and have been feted by artists and writers for decades. Stay in quintas, boutique hotels and riads. There will be two or three harder walks in Portugal then easy walking and cultural exploration in Morocco.
John Matheson will be your tour manager on this tour. John is as an active traveller who enjoys walking as a rewarding way to discover places in depth. Every year since 2005 John, accompanied by his wife, Rosanne, has taken groups of people on walking tours through the picturesque countryside in Europe, staying in small villages and sampling local food and wine. The benefit of his experience and history in these regions is that he knows where to go, what hidden gems to point out along the way, and how to tailor elements of the tour to the particular interests of the participants whenever possible. Having just returned from Portugal, where he spent time in the Douro Valley, John is very keen to take people walking in this special landscape.
