Bike and Barge: Europe Five Countries – August 2026

A biking adventure that takes you on a number of paved rail trail bike paths and the Moselle River cycle path, crossing between the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Germany. This is a relaxed cycle tour on a network of well-maintained paths.

Spend seven nights staying in boutique hotels and biking in Holland, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. Your ride weaves through rolling countryside straddling the borders, now peaceful but fiercely contested over the centuries and filled with history.

In the second week, you board your comfortable barge and bike through the vineyard-clad slopes of the lovely Moselle River and its tributary, the Saar River. This week will be characterised by verdant vineyards, medieval villages, fairy-tale castles, well-preserved half-timbered houses, and Roman ruins in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. There is plenty of time to stop, to see the sights and sample the traditional cuisine, wine and ale of the five countries you bike through.

Cycling during the second week will be on the Vennbahn Railway Bike Path between Aachen and Monschau; the Sauer River Cycle route between Belgium and Luxembourg; the Saar River Trail, and the Moselle River path. Most of the riding will be relatively flat and easy, especially on an e-bike.

Fitness Requirements
Moderate | 3-5 hr/day | 35-60km/day | Undulating terrain, with the occasional longer or steeper climb. Terrain may vary from paved, to gravel to hard packed dirt. Moderate climbing on shorter rides, little climbing on longer rides. Moderate + is quite a bit of climbing. Suitable for bikers with experience over different terrains. E bikes are recommended
