China’s Silk Road September 2018

The Silk Road in central Asia is well known, but much less familiar is where this ancient trading route passes through western China.  Explore China’s Silk Road and discover the effect it had over centuries in introducing other cultures, particularly Buddhism and Islam.  See China’s ethnic diversity by traversing areas where the Han people predominate, and Xinjiang province where the Turkic Uighur people are the majority. Begin in one of China’s ancient capitals, Xi’an, at the eastern end of the Silk Road, before heading west across the country’s vast and arid interior to the trading hubs, garrison towns and oases that were so important to this highway.  Finish in Kashgar, closer to the Mediterranean Sea than to the China Sea, and for more than 2,000 years the hub of commercial and cultural exchange in central Asia.  Explore parts of China that few other international tourists visit, and experience the culture and stark landscapes of the heart of Asia.

Your tour manager is Andrew Matheson, who lived in Beijing for three years while he was Deputy Ambassador at the New Zealand Embassy.  During that time Andrew travelled extensively throughout China, both on official business and for holidays.  His family adventure along the Silk Road route that this tour follows was one of the highlights. Andrew is a keen and adventurous traveller who enjoys exploring off the beaten track in different countries.  His careers as a diplomat and an international development consultant have seen him travelling widely, and working in remote places on pretty much every continent in the world. Andrew applies his organisational skills to make sure the trip runs to plan and delivers the best for all tour members.  He enjoys making tours a special and memorable experience for group members, and looks forward to sharing China’s Silk Road with you.
