Theodore Roosevelt described a train journey through Colorado as ‘the trip that bankrupts the English language’. Find out for yourself! The centrepiece of this extraordinary itinerary is a great circle of the Rocky Mountains that includes six remarkable train rides that fully justify President Roosevelt’s enthusiasm. The tour starts with a stay in the Golden City of San Francisco before boarding the ‘California Zephyr’ for the country’s most scenic and historic mainline rail journey travelling across four states to reach Colorado. After exploring the Rocky Mountains on these unique rail journeys, you will cross New Mexico and Arizona and see the breath-taking spectacle that is the Grand Canyon, before reaching Los Angeles. While this tour is a must for rail enthusiasts, you don’t have to be a train-spotter to enjoy seeing some of America’s grandest scenery from the comfort of a railway carriage.
TOUR EXTENSION Exploring Arizona
At the end of the tour you have the option of extending your stay in America’s west by exploring the desert lands of Arizona. Based in Tucson for 3 nights, discover Arizona’s rich history of Indian nations, Spanish missionaries and the Wild West, and appreciate the unique environment of the mighty Sonora Desert.
