News from the road – Walking Wanaka & Siberia Valley – Feb 2021

In February, we had two groups depart on our ‘Walking Wanaka & Siberia Valley’ tours. Based at the Edgewater hotel on the lakeside in Wanaka, our groups enjoyed a varied selection of walks followed by delicious meals at some excellent local restaurants.

Many of the people in the group had been to Wanaka before but not experienced all these fantastic walks.

The absolute highlight is the Siberia Valley experience. Unbelievable views from our small bright yellow fixed wing Cessna as we fly over glaciated valleys formed during the ice age millions of years ago. The Siberia Valley is aptly named for the hardships experienced in pioneering the region almost 200 year ago, but on our visits it was all fun as we flew in and walked out 10km crossing braided rivers and walking through a beautiful beech tree lined path that DOC has established. Then finishing with a thrilling jet boat ride down the Wilkin river to the Makarora river and back to the Haast Road. As Lindsay Cumberpatch our tour leader for the first group aptly put it “everyone was fizzing on the coach ride home at the end of the day”

Further excellent walks in the area to Diamond lake, Rob Roy Glacier and the Blue Pools top off a great week of exploring this incredibly beautiful area of Aotearoa.

We will be running this tour again in the 2021/22 season. Please contact us if you are keen to join us.
