Japan’s Art & Culture
April 2020

Would you like to gain an intimate understanding of Japan’s rich culture, vibrant art scene, and intriguing architecture?  This out of the ordinary tour introduces you to Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, a serene body of water dotted with an archipelago of islands.  The sea’s coastal periphery is decorated with clusters of elegant cities, peaceful shrines, imposing castles, showcase gardens, and stunning movie locations.  You will meet local artists and craftsmen and visit art and architectural sites that have stimulated the region’s revival.  Many of Japan’s best artists, movie makers, sculptors, and architects are active on these islands and you will see how their work adds vitality to their communities.  A day on Naoshima and visits to Miyajima’s ancient shrine and Hiroshima’s Peace Park are tour highlights.  You will finish with a few nights in Tokyo.  Traditional accommodation and regional cuisine add to this in-depth cultural experience.

This tour has been withdrawn from the 2020 tour programme.

May 2020

CONFIRMED DEPARTURE

Immerse yourself in the Silk Road, the world’s most famous and lively trading highway.  Uzbekistan is the gem of this historic route, with its bustling bazaars, towering mosques and ancient cities.  Experience the rich and diverse culture of Central Asia with fascinating architecture, history, religion and, most of all, its friendly people.  Beginning and ending in Tashkent, explore the ancient cities of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, and the greenest city in Uzbekistan, Fergana.  Visit the dying Aral Sea, one of the world’s environmental disaster areas.  See where communism made its mark on the Asian steppes, with Soviet buildings butting up against glorious Islamic architecture.  This tour is full of memorable experiences – eating dinner in a private home, seeing artisans at work and enjoying traditional performances.

Walking in Japan – The Nakasendo Way
November 2020

Walking the Nakasendo Way is one of our most popular tours. You will start in Kyoto, an ancient capital and cultural epicentre of Japan, and end in vibrant Tokyo. The walks follow some of the best-preserved and most interesting parts of the old road deep into the mountains. In its heyday, in the 17th century, the Nakasendo was crowded with travellers but is now largely forgotten and quiet. Staying in picturesque old post towns where the charming traditional inns have survived into the modern world, you will sleep on futons, eat delicious Japanese food and bathe in thermal baths. The typical daily walk is 10-17 kilometres, and transport can be arranged for those who want a more relaxed day. While you walk through the Japanese countryside, the architecture, food, ceramics and gardens provide a feast for the eyes. Gain a unique experience of Japan and its people as it was and as it is now.

TOUR MANAGER – Andrew Taylor
Andrew has thoroughly enjoyed his previous trips to Japan. His first trip was for the Japanese Tourism Board and took him inland from Nagoya on the Mountain Railway to the traditionally thatched houses of Takayama. His other experiences include the spectacular Hakone Open Air Museum with its many installation art pieces set out in a park-like setting. Andrew’s second trip took him to Bihoro in northern Hokkaido as part of a sister city exchange. He stayed with a traditional Japanese farming family and helped with the potato harvest. Japan has many contrasts to New Zealand, Tokyo’s massive Tsukiji fish market; and the Shinkansen trains speeding you across the countryside at 180km and always arriving on time. The cleanliness and the feeling of complete safety are abiding memories.
