Bike & Barge Northern Italy & Provence
September 2020

Bike and Barge – the perfect travelling combo! By bike, soak in the sights and sounds of the countryside and then come ‘home’ each night to a comfortable cabin in your floating ‘hotel’. The fun begins when you board your barge in the city of Mantua. En route you will discover Ferrara, a jewel of the Italian Renaissance; cruise through the Po Delta Reserve experiencing the tranquility of Northern Italy and end in the warm embrace of the Venetian Lagoon. Cycling into Venice is a special experience and you’ll have time to explore the islands and waterways of this enchanting city.

The second part of your tour takes you to Provence and the inspirational landscapes that attracted many painters. Here you board another barge moored in Avignon. Visit the highlights of Van Gogh’s Provence, then wind your way through the scenic back roads and the calm waters of the Camargue. Expect easy rides with frequent stops to refuel with gelato and espresso. This is the fourth time we have taken this tour and each time, we have received very positive feedback from participants.

America’s South
October 2020

Take a journey into America’s turbulent past following in the footsteps of Dr Martin Luther King. Travel the Civil Rights Trail from Atlanta, Georgia through Alabama and onto the site of his assassination, more than half a century ago in Memphis, Tennessee.  Lovers of music will enjoy visits to the birthplace of rock and roll, Sun Studios, Graceland and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. While in the South you will see fall colours from a paddle-steamer in Chattanooga. The trip culminates in an exploration of the swamps of the Bayou, a Louisiana Antebellum plantation and the French Quarter of New Orleans where you will learn of the impact of Hurricane Katrina. What sets this tour apart is that much of the history has taken place within your own lifetime and you will see and feel what you have previously only read about. Walking in Japan – The Nakasendo Way
November 2020

Walking the Nakasendo Way is one of our most popular tours. You will start in Kyoto, an ancient capital and cultural epicentre of Japan, and end in vibrant Tokyo. The walks follow some of the best-preserved and most interesting parts of the old road deep into the mountains. In its heyday, in the 17th century, the Nakasendo was crowded with travellers but is now largely forgotten and quiet. Staying in picturesque old post towns where the charming traditional inns have survived into the modern world, you will sleep on futons, eat delicious Japanese food and bathe in thermal baths. The typical daily walk is 10-17 kilometres, and transport can be arranged for those who want a more relaxed day. While you walk through the Japanese countryside, the architecture, food, ceramics and gardens provide a feast for the eyes. Gain a unique experience of Japan and its people as it was and as it is now.

TOUR MANAGER – Andrew Taylor
Andrew has thoroughly enjoyed his previous trips to Japan. His first trip was for the Japanese Tourism Board and took him inland from Nagoya on the Mountain Railway to the traditionally thatched houses of Takayama. His other experiences include the spectacular Hakone Open Air Museum with its many installation art pieces set out in a park-like setting. Andrew’s second trip took him to Bihoro in northern Hokkaido as part of a sister city exchange. He stayed with a traditional Japanese farming family and helped with the potato harvest. Japan has many contrasts to New Zealand, Tokyo’s massive Tsukiji fish market; and the Shinkansen trains speeding you across the countryside at 180km and always arriving on time. The cleanliness and the feeling of complete safety are abiding memories.

Cruising the Ganges and Nepal
October & November 2020

An expedition on the Lower Ganges or Hooghly River is one of the prettiest river journeys imaginable. The river wends its way through the lush countryside of West Bengal where a vibrant rural life abounds. There can be no better vessel to explore this lush tapestry than the classic Pandaw rivership. With 18 staterooms on two decks, all with personal verandah space, this is a comfortable small ship. Although Nepal is a trekkers’ paradise, this is not a trekking tour as there is so much more to this small, friendly country sandwiched between China and India. You will visit the bustling city of Kathmandu with its golden temples, world heritage sites and colourful local bazaars and stay in a luxury lodge at Chitwan National Park, home to many species of birds and animals. With an opportunity to fly up the valley and see the majestic Himalayas and Mt Everest, this tour offers something for everyone.

Viva la Cuba
November 2020

Colourful, vibrant, and exuberant – Cuba is a pure delight to the senses.  Pastel-coloured Spanish colonial buildings line the narrow-cobbled streets in Havana’s old town.  The town squares are alive with the rhythmic beats of salsa and jazz music, popularised by the famous Buena Vista Social Club.  Its culture is an eclectic mix of African and Spanish heritage.  Its political ideology and compelling revolutionary history lends an aura of mystery.  60,000 classic cars from the1950s coolly cruise the streets signifying a nation that has been trapped in a time warp.  With the embargo lifted, now is the time to visit before the Old Cuba is gone.  Walk back in time to a living museum in Trinidad.  Head into rural Cuba and stay in Casa Particulares, licensed private homes offering B&B accommodation. Interact with your welcoming hosts and find out what makes this place such an undeniably alluring country.
