A Fascinating Experience on Our Turkey Tour

Having a cup of tea in someone’s lounge is nothing unusual. Having a cup of tea in a lounge in an underground house in Cappadocia is very unusual. Centuries ago thousands lived underground in Cappadocia, Turkey, however today there are very few families still living underground. We were very fortunate to have had this ‘different’ experience through a contact of Funda, our Turkish guide who leads the Calder and Lawson Turkey tour.

It was a fascinating experience meeting the family and a privilege to be invited in to their underground house. A house 6 centuries old and hacked out of the limestone in one of the fairy chimneys in the area which provided a lovely cool oasis from the heat of a clear spring day.

Having begun the day with a spectacular balloon flight over the amazing ‘luna-scape’ of Groeme, viewing these chimney like towers from above, to then be invited into an underground home and experience how life in Cappadocia is and was made an everlasting impression.

This was just one of our many special days we had on our Calder and Lawson tour of Turkey.
